Дистрофия и распад нервных волокон, возникающие при поражении клеточных тел нейронов или при пересечении нерва и обусловленные выпадением трофического влияния нейронов.
Описана английским нейрофизиологом Августом Валлером в 1850г. (Waller A.V. Experiments on the section of the glossopharyngeal and hypoglossal nerves of the frog, and observations on the alterations produced thereby in the structure of their primitive fibres // Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London, 1850. – Vol.140. – P.423-429).
